Personal Safety
Personal safety isn’t just for children and women. It is for everyone. To ensure you remain safe in the borough, you need to be aware and prepare.
When walking at night:
- Always walk in the centre of the pavement in well lit areas
- Avoid short cuts and deserted areas
- Walk facing the oncoming traffic where you can be seen easily.
- Don’t walk with your mobile phone; this will make you less familiar with your surroundings.
- Cover up jewellery
- Only carry the money that you need. Don’t carry pin numbers and keep cheques and credit cards separate.
- Do not leave bags unattended.
- Keep wallets and purses in and inside pocket.
When walking in the borough:
- Try not to advertise to a thief the items that you are carrying, e.g. mobile phones, i-Pods, money and jewellery.
- Make sure your bag is closed and buckled.
When driving in the borough:
- Lock your car doors whilst driving.
- Always wear your seatbelt.
- Never open the vehicle door to strangers.
- Park in a well lit area or an approved car park.
- When approaching the car keep the keys ready to use in your hand. You don’t want to be distracted looking for them next to the car.
- If you have remote control locking, only open doors when you reach your vehicle.
- When returning to your parked car, remain aware of your surroundings.
